There was much anticipation and excitement with the re-opening of the Stag Hotel last week. Located on the prime corner position of Rundle Street and East Terrace, the venue had undergone a change of ownership, a complete refurbishment and an overhaul of the menu. The kitchen is now run by the former chef of Assaggio Ristorante and the offerings have been given a new lease on life with food created using fresh locally sourced produce and premium quality ingredients. This place is no longer a steakhouse but a place to come for delicious, modern Australian cuisine. Adelaide Food Central, along with other guests, were invited by Zomato to sample some of their dishes. All food and drink were provided free of charge.
For entree, I had the Heirloom Fruit and Vegetables. The dish was bright and colourful, and almost too good to eat. There was a lot of contrast in flavours and textures with the natural sweetness of the fruit and the crunchiness of the vegetables. The citronette dressing was tart and brought all the ingredients together. A very light and refreshing dish.
For the main, I had the Murrayland Lamb Cutlets. Great presentation seemed to be a common theme with each and every dish and this one was no different. The lamb was tender, succulent and perfectly cooked, although a little on the fatty side. The curd was light and delicate, and the vegetables, firm and well cooked. The au jus was well flavoured and matched perfectly with the meat.
For dessert, I had the Creme Fraiche Pannacotta. Once again, beautiful in presentation. The pannacotta had a thick consistency with a silky smooth texture. The pouring of the macerated berries onto the pannacotta added a natural sweetness to the dish. The moscato jelly was firm and delicate, while the tiny meringues balanced the dish off.
While the new Stag Hotel is only 6 days old, I was impressed with the amount of thought that had gone into this place. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed, and just about every dish that came out was well executed. This place ticks all the boxes and will surely impress.
Adelaide Food Central would like to thank the staff at the Stag Hotel for their hospitality as well as Zomato for organising such a great event. The new Stag Hotel is impressive and is definitely a place you should check out.
