Tasting Australia 2023 – The Lane Wine Dinner at Sammy’s on the Marina

In arguably what is the best foodie event in Australia, Tasting Australia is on again and each year is better than ever! As part of Tasting Australia this year, Sammy’s On The Marina have teamed up with The Lane Vineyard to host a delicious five course wine dinner.

Upon arrival guests received a glass of The Lois Blanc de Blanc NV. The refreshing sparkling was a delight to our senses with subtle citrus, wild flower and crunchy apple balanced by a fine bead and crisp acidity.

We started the night with Scallops Crudo with buttermilk, pickled apple and bay leaf oil. You could taste the freshness of thin scallop slices. The combination of buttermilk oil, pickled apple and bay leaf oil created the perfect dressing for the freshly caught scallops. This dish was paired with the 2022 The Lane Pinot Gris. The wine was clean, crisp and fresh. A classic cool-climate Pinot Gris displaying lifted guava, honeysuckle and crunchy Nashi pear with a waxy texture and lively citrus finish.

Next was the Spencer Gulf BBQ King Prawns with fermented garlic butter, chilli and torn bread. The Spencer Gulf prawns were barbecued for just the right amount of time. The prawn shell was nice and charred while the prawn was sweet and succulent. The garlic butter and chilli took the dish to the next level and the bread was the perfect accompaniment to soak up the delicious juices. This was paired with the 2021 The Lane “Gathering” Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. A gently oaked Sauvignon Semillon displaying complex aromas of lemon myrtle, blackcurrant leaf and gunflint. A tightly structured palate of grapefruit, gooseberry and mandarin zest with excellent natural acidity, minerality and length.

We were then greeted with Crispy Skin Port Lincoln Kingfish served with barbecued zucchini and sweet and sour fennel. The kingfish fillet was perfectly cooked. The flesh was soft and tender, while the skin was crisp like a potato chip. The zucchini and fennel were great co-stars to the hero of the dish. This was matched with 2021 The Lane Chardonnay. The wine was fresh, vibrant and textural. A contemporary cool-climate Chardonnay displaying orange blossom, grapefruit and green apple with a crunchy and flinty finish.

The star of the show was the Mayura Station Wagyu with potato rosti and bone marrow jus. The beef was juicy, tender, succulent and cooked to perfection. This was accompanied by a potato rosti which was a crispy golden brown. The bone marrow jus had plenty of depth and married all of the ingredients together. The dish was paired with the 2020 The Lane Light Dry Red (LDR) and 2019 The Lane “Reunion” Shiraz. The LDR is their take on a light dry red. A medium-bodied blend of Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Aromas of rich plum, forest fruits and dry herbs followed by flavours of black cherry and dark chocolate with fine lingering tannins. The Reunion Shiraz is a single-vineyard Shiraz displaying aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, star anise, stewed plum and toasty oak. A decadent palate of forest fruits, sweet spices, black pepper, cherry compote fine toasty oak, firm mouth coating soft tannins.

To end the night we had the Orange Creme Caramel for dessert. A firm but soft custard that was smothered in a rich caramel sauce with a subtle hint of orange. The perfect way to end the night.

Sammy’s On The Marina have outdone themselves once again. We experienced five amazing courses matched with equally good wines from The Lane Vineyard. Adelaide Food Central would like to thank Pervez Alam and all the staff at Sammy’s On The Marina for their kind hospitality, and of course, Turon White from The Lane Vineyard for their great matching wines.
