Christmas is officially over, and we are all ‘fooded’ out… or not! The sun was shining and the waves dancing as we walked into the Asian Flavour House at The Marina Pier, Glenelg.
Upon walking into the restaurant, we were greeted by twinkling stars shining down upon us; apparently not just for the festive season, these artificial stars shine all year round! Proud to celebrate all of Asia’s most celebrated cuisines, the Asian Flavour House was bound to serve up some truly impressive dishes.
First up to hit our plates was the classic Vegetarian Gyoza. One serving consists of 6 dumplings served with a house-made soy sauce. I found these adorable dumplings just delicious and was so happy with how you could taste each and every vegetable in the mix. Especially delicious was the strong carrot flavour that burst through with every bite. Overall, these dumplings were well seasoned, plump, and we were suitably impressed. It was certainly a great way to start the meal.
Malaysian Satay Chicken Skewers
Next up were the Malaysian Satay Chicken Skewers [peanuts]! This is another very common dish and again didn’t fail to delight. Two skewers with three or four plump pieces of chicken on each served with a peanut sauce. The sauce was actually the star of the dish, with a light blend of spices serving to elevate the simple flavour of the chicken. The batter was crispy and light, topping off a generally lovely entree.
Salt and Pepper Quail
If you’re after something a little more adventurous then perhaps our next choice is for you! This Salt and Pepper Quail will cause at least one dinner guest to raise their eyebrows and for good reason too! Seasoned with chilli, crispy peanuts and a large array of delightful spices they certainly looked gorgeous on the plate. Despite the plentiful serving of four quail wings, there won’t be any leftovers…
Egg Fried Rice
If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it! The chef at the Asian Flavour House must have channelled this age-old saying when frying up the Egg Fried Rice because it truly took me back to eating traditional Nasi Goreng in Bali. The generously seasoned rice was slightly chewy, laden with a variety of toppings including scrambled egg, BBQ pork, peas, chives, capsicum… we could go on for years! If you’re after something a little more filling then perhaps the Signature Fried Rice XO Sauce with prawns, squid, scallops, eggs and mussels is more up your alley. They also have an Asian Fried Rice with prawns, mixed vegetables, eggs and BBQ pork.
Mongolian Lamb with Leeks and Onion
Time to get meaty! The Mongolian Lamb with Leeks and Onion was served on a hot iron dish. The fragrant aromas of the dish are enough to get everyone gathering from far and wide. The strips of lamb were tender, the sauce not too overpowering and the veggies plentiful. A solid, top dish which is perfect on top of a bed of rice.
Steamed Barramundi Fillet
There were many contenders for the most extravagant dish on the Asian Flavour House menu, but this Steamed Barramundi Fillet with ginger, scallion and mushroom seemed to take the cake! The seemingly giant fillet was laid out on a long, elegant serving dish on a bed of sweet and sour sauce, a work of art! The fish is topped with thin apple slivers which add a lightness to the dish and serve to refresh the pallet.
Dry Fire String Beans
With over 75 dishes on their menu, the range of side dishes at the Asian Flavour House is staggering. We decided to try the Dry Fire String Beans and I’m certainly glad we did! Tender and succulent, this dish would pair beautifully with any of the main dishes. The sweetness of the beans was delectable, and I loved the garnishes on top. I must admit that I went straight to the beans when packing my takeaway container ;).
The Asian Flavour House is definitely somewhere to hit up for lunch or dinner when you’re around Glenelg. With a truly lovely atmosphere, the somehow intimate while spacious restaurant is sure to be a winner with kids and adults alike.
To the Asian Flavour House, thank you for an amazing experience! I’m certainly looking forward to my next visit when I’ll be ordering the $25 per head vegetarian Yum Cha!
