Saracens Head is a pub located on Carrington Street, in the quieter part of the CBD. Set in a double storey character building, customers are greeted by the main bar as you walk through the main entrance. The interior is a clever mix of old and new with a modern dining area that looks into the beer garden. The menu is modern Australian with starters, pizzas, mains and your classic pub grub.
We started with the Saracens Beef Burger which consists of dry aged brisket, house pickled cucumber, gruyere cheese, mixed greens, tomato and aioli mayo. The brisket patty was a bit smaller in diameter than the brioche bun, but it had good thickness. The meat was well cooked, although it could have been seasoned more. The gruyere cheese was nicely melted over the patty and had a creamy and nutty flavour. The mixed greens and tomato were fresh and crisp, and the pickled cucumber added a nice tanginess to the burger. The brioche bun was nice and firm, and held all the ingredients in well. A nice uncomplicated burger.
Next was the Jerk Chicken Burger made from chicken thigh, mixed greens, tomato, chipotle mayo and corn avocado salsa. The chicken thigh was a decent size and covered in seasoning. It was cooked until it was darkened and each bite was juicy and succulent with lovely smokey flavours. The salsa in the burger was light and refreshing, and we really enjoyed the crunchy corn kernels. As with the previous burger, the vegetables were fresh and crisp, with the subtly spicy chipotle mayo adding a bit of excitement. A really good burger.
The staff at The Saracens were very friendly. Customers note that the kitchen doesn’t open till noon, so if you want something earlier, there is a bit more of a wait. The atmosphere was very relaxed, particularly during a weekday, but I imagine it would be different on a Friday or Saturday night. The food at The Saracens is slightly more than expensive than other pubs with the burgers at $22 each.
It’s a nice pub in the quieter part of the city. Worth checking out.
