Decant Restaurant

The Decant Restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Clarion Hotel Soho on Flinders Street. Situated right in the heart of the city, the establishment specialises in modern Australian cuisine with offerings for all meals of the day. Their sophisticated menu is complemented by a selection of fine Australian and French wine.

The restaurant is cosy and intimate, and certainly oozes a lot of style and class. With Tom Dixon feature lighting, Kartell dining chairs, Missoni fabric banquettes and imported marble benchtops at the bar, this is certainly not a cheap fit out. The floor to ceiling glass windows allow plenty of natural light to flow through its dual frontage making this place light and airy.

For breakfast, I had the Decant Big Breakfast which consisted of poached free range eggs, sausage, Barossa smoked bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato and sourdough. The dish came out after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented.

I’ve seen better poached eggs in my time. Not only was the egg white all over the place, the yolk was cooked through. I also thought the sausage was a bit fatty and it would have been nicer had the meat been well refined. The highlight was the Barossa smoked bacon. It was nice and crispy, had lovely smokey flavours and wasn’t too salty.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed, however, I was the only customer at the time. The pricing is average with the breakfast setting me back $18.

I think I’d have to come back again to get a better indication of what this place is like.
