Pick A Local, Pick SA! is putting the fun back into fungi, celebrating National Mushroom Day with a cook off between Master Chef contestants Mandy Hall and Helen ‘the Greek Vegetarian.’
Held in Mushroom SA’s growing shed, the two chefs will go head to head, competing against one another to produce the winning mushroom dish.
Mandy Hall who appeared on last year’s season of Master Chef is a passionate food fermenter and describes her food as ‘rustic with a flair for Middle Eastern.’
Helen Mouneimne is the founder of The Greek Vegetarian, a successful food blog which develops recipes for an array of SA companies and also teaches people how to cook in their homes.
Viewers can tune in live during their lunch break for some dinner inspiration, to ask questions directly to the chefs and be in the running to win a box of fresh SA Mushrooms.
The event will be held from SA Mushrooms’ headquarters which recently underwent a $17 million capital upgrades.
The facility’s growing rooms were expanded and a new, built for purpose compost site was completed this year, making SA Mushrooms the largest privately-owned mushroom farm in SA.
The Femia family, Father Sam and sons Nat and Nick, have been growing mushrooms in SA since 1998. In 22 years, the farm has expanded from six to 50 growing rooms and growing production increased from 2.5 to 55 tonnes per week.
The recent upgrades position the fully-integrated business who employ more than 100 staff and each week as a primary grower and supplier of mushrooms to major supermarkets, independent greengrocers and produce markets in South Australia, and nation-wide.
