Uncle is a fantastic hidden gem hidden on Waymouth Street. For as little as ten dollars you can completely indulge yourself in the delight that is Hainanese Chicken and rice, along with succulent sides for every taste.

With the slogan of ‘Keeping Tradition Alive’, Uncle is focused to keeping their family recipe of juicy chicken around and readily available to the public. We loved this personal touch to the restaurant, the whole atmosphere was inviting and homey.

Uncle cook all of their chicken and side dishes on site with a whole lot of passion and a whole lot of love, we were so lucky to get to try their menu.

Uncle Traditional

Keeping it simple but effective, the Uncle Traditional consists of slow poached chicken in a 76-degree broth, served with fragrant rice. The chicken was juicy and flavoursome, with tastes of ginger, garlic and sweet soy sauce poking through. Paired with fluffy fragrant rice, this traditional dish is packed with flavour and texture. For extra crunch, you can have your chicken with crispy skin, marinated and then cooked in 170-degree oil. The crispy skin is completely to die for and really adds something special to this dish.

We loved the many complex flavours found in this seemingly simple dish, and for the price point it certainly is worth it!

Sides

To accompany our chicken and rice, we delighted in the many sides Uncle has to offer. We were treated to refreshing Asian Greens with a light oyster sauce, along with a light vegetarian Laksa Broth with vegetables. The Laksa had a mild bite to it and was perfectly hot and spiced.

As a little something extra, the deep-fried Pumpkin Fritters were a delight. Coated in a seasoned and crispy batter, the pumpkin was juicy and soft on the inside. Perfect dipped in chili sauce!

We couldn’t possibly leave without trying the Singapore Chili Soft Shell Crab, which was packed with a punch of heat! We love a little spice, and this side with the chicken and rice was a flavour hit.

This visit went down very smoothly with a pint of ice-cold Asahi beer as we watched the afternoon go by! Thank you very much to Uncle for having us, we sure hope to be back soon!
