The Arkaba Hotel, renowned for supporting South Aussie local produce, hosted the SA Spirit Showcase last week; which boasted more than 60 samples from some of our State’s best distilleries.
South Australia is obviously world famous for our wines and wineries, but the locally produced selection of spirits and liqueurs are also entirely worthy of our attention.
We’ve compiled a brief snippet of some of our favourite distilleries and producers from the night for your ginitiation into SA’s spirit and distillery scene.
Located just outside the city, in Thebarton, Ambra Liqueurs are in touch with the city-cosmopolitan vibe and have a range of liqueurs to match. Their Spritz collection is well worth the mention, with the Limoncello the iconic centrepiece. Served by itself, or with some Prosecco, it is a summer afternoon delight. And what’s more, you don’t have to go out of your way to buy it, as it is stocked at Dan Murphy’s. Ambra Liqueurs just made your Sunday-session that much better!
Adelaide Hills Distillery
Having recently won the ‘World’s Best Gin Award’ this year for their 78 Degrees gin, we were keen to see what all the fuss is about, and it was certainly a winner in our books too. Another surprise favourite we sampled was their Gunnery Australian Spiced gin. Flavoured with native Aussie botanicals, the Gunnery also makes the most of some cinnamon, vanilla, hazelnut and bush honey flavours for a punching aftertaste. The distillery is also working on a new and exciting Cellar Door in the Adelaide Hills, which will be opening soon – so keep your eyes peeled.
Settlers Artisan Spirits
Spirit and liqueur connoisseurs from McLaren Vale, Settlers specialise in an array of alcohols. Gin, whiskey, rum and vodka, there is something for everyone. Something different, and entirely unique to Settlers is their monthly ‘Gin Masterclass’, which you are able to see, and participate in the gin-making process, and flavour your own to take home for only $60. Where do I sign up?! Visit their website for more information.
Never Never Distilling Co.
This suburban distillery, in Royal Park, reinvigorates the bold and robust gin flavour of the 1930s. Three local lads with a passion for innovation launched their company just this year, and have already made a splash with their intense, yet wholesome flavours. The perfect gin for they thrill-seeker-type, never say never and try some Never Never.
We would like to congratulate the Arkaba Hotel and all the distilleries featured on the night for such a wonderful and successful showcase of South Aussie spirits and liqueurs. The variety and quality of produce available in our State is something we are incredibly proud of, and this most certainly extends to the distillery scene too.
