We’ve known about Mimasu for quite some time and it’s only until now that we’ve got around to paying them a visit. The Japanese restaurant is located on the ground floor of the VUE on King William apartment complex which is at the southern end of the city. The fit out is contemporary with various seating options, and the floor to ceiling windows allow plenty of natural light to flow through during the day. The menu looks distinctively Japanese, but then there’s the odd western ingredient thrown into the mix to add a few surprises.
We came here for lunch and ordered their Bento Sets. As expected, the daytime offering was smaller with a sample of the dishes that you see on the dinner menu. Each Bento Set comes with sashimi, miso soup, rice, green salad and house made pickles.
First out was the sashimi, green salad and house made pickles. The salad was fresh and crisp, and adequately dressed, while the house made pickles were tangy and crunchy. The single slice of kingfish and salmon were fresh with a silky smooth texture. Not a bad starter, but a few more slices of fish wouldn’t have gone astray.
For my main, I had the Karaage Chicken with kewpie. I thought the plating was generous with plenty of chicken and kewpie. The chicken was juicy and succulent, and covered with a nice, crispy coating. It even had a little bit of a kick at the end of each bite. Very well executed.
Lily had the Angus Striploin with horseradish, grilled negi and umezu glaze. I was told that the dish was delicious, and the slice of beef that I tried was perfectly cooked.
While we understand that lunch times are often slow for businesses down the southern end of the city, we did notice we were the only customers in the restaurant during our visit. That’s a shame considering we enjoyed the experience. The food was great, the service was attentive and the atmosphere was laid back. Prices for lunch are a bit on the pricier side with our Bento Sets costing $22 and $32 respectively (more expensive than the $10 lunch deals offered by surrounding businesses). Having said that, we were dining at a restaurant.
Mimasu is open for lunch from Tuesday to Friday from 12pm-2:30pm, and for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30pm till late.
