There’s a lot of Thai eateries around the place, but we couldn’t think of too many in the Glenside area. That’s until the recent opening of Uthai Kitchen on Greenhill Road. Run by husband and wife team, Carlo and Meree, the couple have quickly gained a loyal following among locals with their fresh and delicious, authentic Thai cuisine. The menu is filled with all your Thai favourites set out in a simplified format.
We started with the Chicken Spring Rolls which comes in a serving of four. They were deep fried to a light golden brown with the pastry being nice and crunchy. The filling was a well seasoned combination of chicken mince, glass noodles and vegetables. A great way to start off proceedings.
Next were the Vegetable Curry Puffs. Inside a light, flaky pastry were a medley of vegetables which consisted of potato, pumpkin, corn, peas and carrot. The filling was very lightly spiced so should be suitable for all palates.
The last of the entrees was the Satay Chicken. The chicken was juicy and succulent, and covered in a thick satay sauce. It’s a fairly stock standard dish that was very well executed.
A classic Thai dish is the Massaman Beef Curry. Lean morsels of beef and potato are slowly cooked in a tasty curry sauce. The beef simply falls apart, as does the potato. The sauce is lightly spiced and goes perfectly well with a bowl of steamed rice.
The other Thai classic is the Combination Pad Thai. The noodles were cooked to perfection; not too gluggy, still firm and slightly chewy. The prawns and slices of chicken were tender and juicy, and the bean sprouts and peanuts added a nice crunchy texture.
The Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab was beautifully presented on a lettuce leaf. The generous portions of crab were nice and crunchy on the outside, while soft and delicate in the centre. Wok tossed with diced onion and capsicum, it’s one of those dishes that you keep on going back for.
Last but not least was the Green Chicken Curry. Generous amounts of chicken breast slices were swimming in a well seasoned curry sauce. Out of all the dishes, this curry really had some kick. This was balanced by the zucchini, eggplant, green beans and basil which provided a much need vegetable component to the dish.
We had an exceptional experience at Uthai Kitchen. The kitchen was run like a well oiled machine and all our food arrived shortly after ordering. The portions sizes were generous and you could taste the freshness in each of the dishes. Carlo runs front of house, and provided attentive and efficient service, while Meree was in the kitchen working all her magic. This place simply ticks all the boxes.
Uthai Kitchen is open for lunch, from Tuesday to Friday from 11am-3pm, and for dinner, Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm-9pm.
