At Adelaide Food Central, we love our desserts and pastries and were excited to discover a recently opened patisserie in the eastern suburbs. Nestled within a shopping complex in the posh suburb of Malvern is Gateaux 259. Open for only 7 months, the owners Stephanie Rijken and James Donnelly, have backgrounds in hospitality and a wealth of experience when it comes to sweets and desserts. Everything is made fresh in-house daily, and you’ll be salivating when you see what is on offer.
Believe it or not when the owners first gained possession of the store, the premises were completely black. Stephanie and James have skillfully done the fitout and given the place a new lease on life. We loved the use of timber railings above the service counter which almost creates a separate space in the open plan area. The clean sharp lines make the place modern and elegant, and is minimalism at its best. The floor to ceiling windows allow plenty of natural light in, and the neutral colour tones simply make the space warm and inviting.
It goes without saying, most people come here for their sweets and pastries, and it wouldn’t have been right if we didn’t sit down and try one. Not wanting something overly sweet, we went for the Matcha Gateaux. It’s essentially layers of soft, delicate green tea sponge combined with smooth and sweet white chocolate, topped with a matcha mousse. Matcha and green tea can often have a bitterness that is overpowering but not so in this case.
We would have loved to have tried each and every sweet on offer, but unfortunately, we’re watching our waist lines. Instead, we’ve just included some pictures of what is currently available.
Not feeling like something sweet? Don’t worry! There’s a savoury breakfast and lunch menu which is available all day. The friendly owners and staff will certainly look after you, to the point you’ll feel right at home.
Gateaux 259 is open from 8am-6pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 10am-4pm on Sundays.
