The Market Shed on Holland has become a real Sunday tradition with easy access to fresh produce and food stalls. If you’re coming here for food, you’re really spoilt for choice and making a decision is often a difficult one. The latest food vendor to join the community is Southern Street which refers to Southern Italian street food. Their offerings are simple and straight forward with two types of pizza and four types of calzone. With champion pizza tosser Ettore Bertonati making the food, you know you’re in for a special treat. Adelaide Food Central was invited to sample some of the food on offer which was provided free of charge.
The Margherita pizza is an Italian classic. So simple and yet so delicious. The pizza base is thin, light and airy, and the crust is a little thicker so you have something to hold on to. The tomato base is applied generously and has a subtle sweetness. This matches well with the basil, which is sweet and savoury with a hint of mintiness. The fior di latte mozzarella cheese is thick and gooey, and brings everything together.
The Calzone Stracciatello is one of their dessert specials and consists of jelly bush honey, ricotta and 70% cocoa nibs. Essentially a folded dessert pizza, this sweet treat is decadent and delicious. The ricotta has a soft texture and its sweetness compliments that of the honey and cocoa.
When it comes to making great pizza, the team behind Southern Street certainly know what they’re doing. The ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, and the menu is seasonal. With everything under $10 you really can’t go wrong. They’re located right at the entrance at The Market Shed on Holland. Be sure to check them out!
