There’s nothing like a refreshingly cold gelato on a warm Summer day. While walking down Melbourne Street and in need for some relief from the heat, I came across Bononia, a small gelato store. As their name suggests, gelato is their specialty and there are a fair few flavours to choose from. They also have a selection of sweets which incorporate their gelato as well as a range of chocolates.
The space is modern and well presented, however the store will just seat over a dozen people. The frontage consists of bi-fold doors which open up to maximise the amount of natural light.
Prior to ordering, I was given free tastings of the gelato flavours on offer. I can think of one place that is offering free tastings as part of their opening special. Tastings should always be free, otherwise, how else will you know if you like it or not?
Today, I ordered three scoops in a large plastic tub. The flavours were Zabaione, Pistachio and Coffee. The presentation was not that great, and the cup is filled to just above the top level. I would have expected the scoops to be bulging over the top. There is also an inconsistency with the scoops. The first one is significantly large and by the time you get to the third, it’s about half the amount of the first scoop.
Having said all that, the gelati and sorbets on offer are simply amazing. The flavours were so natural and refreshingly good. My personal favourite was the Zabaione which is made from egg yolks, sugar and sweet wine. It was a pity it was the third scoop and there wasn’t as much as I would have liked.
The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is good value as far as gelato goes. One scoop is $3.50, two scoops $5.50 and three $7. The scoops are a decent size as is the plastic cup.
My new favourite place down Melbourne Street for gelato.
