Morphettville Racecourse – Thirsty Camel Cup Lawn Party

Once reserved for Arabian royalty and Dubai’s elite, the Middle East’s most popular and illustrious sport, camel racing, is descending on Morphettville Racecourse for the first time.

Proudly supported by Thirsty Camel, iconic Morphettville Racecourse is bringing camel racing to Adelaide this year for one night only, in an eccentric exhibition of entertainment and camels for the Thirsty Camel Cup Lawn Party.

Held on Friday, 21st of December, the Thirsty Camel Lawn Party is the perfect way to kick off the Christmas festivities by gathering together friends, colleagues and family for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Morphettville Racecourse Marketing Manager, Luke Schapel, is excited to host the centuries-old sport.

“Camel racing dates back to the 7th Century but it’s never graced the Adelaide circuit. We thought it was about time we bring this fun and quirky event to South Australian shores,” says Schapel.

Reaching speeds of up to 65 km/h, these unlikely athletes will make the trek from Oakfield Ranch in New South Wales especially for this one-off event.

“They may not be as graceful as a racehorse, but camels are phenomenal sprinters and extremely entertaining to watch,” says Oakfield Ranch Owner, Rod Sansom.

“When first in training, we put the young camels out with the experienced racers and they learn from running with the herd – it’s a more natural and ethical process. Camels are packed full of personality and we can’t wait for the people of Adelaide to see them in action.”

Kicking off from 2pm, punters will spend the afternoon watching the sun setting over Morphettville whilst enjoying entertainment by local Adelaide deejays. An array of food trucks will be on offer, serving a range of delicious meals, snacks and drinks, plus a happy hour will be running from 2pm – 4pm.

For those really wanting to make a night of it, the official after party kicks off trackside after the last race.

“The Thirsty Camel Cup Lawn Party is about more than just racing – it’s an experience and a whole lot of fun,” says Schapel.

“Over half the event tickets have already been sold, so we are confident this will be another sold out event for Morphettville Racecourse.”

The Thirsty Camel Cup Lawn Party kicks off from 2pm, Friday 21st December at Morphettville Racecourse. For more information and to secure tickets, visit www.morphettville.com.au.
