Wangolina Wines

As I sit at my desk, reflecting on the evening with Wangolina Wines at Fine & Fettle, STILL salivating over the delicious mushroom and truffle arancini balls I can’t help but do so in character, swirling my glass of Montepulciano!

As a young wine enthusiast (if I do say so myself) I love connecting with the winemaker and hearing stories of the vineyard to bottle process and juicy characteristics of the region.

Anita Goode, Director and Winemaker at Wangolina Wines was so warming and “not too serious” as we gathered together at Fine & Fettle amongst fellow wine lovers and Adelady guests, discussing her passion for the Limestone Coast Region, extensive wine knowledge and Wangolina’s HUGE range of Varietals.

We were lucky to sample 5 of 16 wines including the Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Grüner Veltliner, Moniputchiano and Tempranillo.

A few highlights from the line up where the Grüner Veltliner, AKA Grüner, which is a beautiful grape variety originally from Austria. Up until recently, the Adelaide Hills had been the only SA wine region to grow this variety, as it requires a cooler climate (amongst other things) to grow successfully. BUT with some expert winemaking skills, Anita and her team were able to grow it in the Limestone Coast, resulting in this beautiful wine.

“If you haven’t tried this variety before, think steely dry Riesling combined with the texture and luscious deliciousness of a Pinot Gris!”

The blend of Dolcetto and Tempranillo make up Wangolina’s Rose “The Goldilocks” of their range. Not too sweet, not to dry. Not too red, not to pink. It was a delightfully refreshing wine with bright fruit flavours, and it was definitely jussstttttt right.

Another favourite, not just because I have a glass in hand, is the Montepulciano. Monte for short. This is the second most planted red grape in Italy, and those Italians know their wines! On tasting, I experience a lovely smooth medium bodied wine, a little dry with clean red fruit flavours and a hint of oregano! A perfect wine for any evening. YUM!

Wangolina Wines can be found between the coastal towns of Kingston and Robe in the Mt Benson region, which is a part of the broader Limestone Coast wine region. The Wangolina Wine Room is open 7 days a week for tastings and sales between 10am and 5pm OR you can find Wangolina Wines is some of Adelaide’s best independent cellars! Goodwood, Belair, East End, Melbourne St and Hutt st to name a few! We look forward to exploring the rest of the range soon!
