South Australia’s food, wine, fashion and cycling enthusiasts will all be invited to celebrate 18 years of success at the much-loved Unley Gourmet Gala street party on Tuesday, January 16.
The 18th-annual Gala – held along popular shopping and dining precinct King William Road – is the longest running event presented in conjunction with the Tour Down Under, which will celebrate its 20th birthday in 2018.
This year’s Unley Gourmet Gala will take place on the eve of the TDU Stage 2 from Unley to Stirling and is set to attract more than 20,000 people to King William Road.
City of Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne said the Gala was a fabulous opportunity for Unley retailers and restaurants to present their finest offerings to tens of thousands of revelers at the lively street party.
“The Gala is always a much-anticipated event and a wonderful celebration of our vibrant cycling culture with a huge variety of South Australia’s finest food, wine, fashion, music and entertainment,” Mr Clyne said.
“In 2018 we’ll have more than 30 gourmet food and wine stalls on offer in addition to King William Road restaurants opening for longer and spilling out onto the street so that diners can enjoy the wonderful atmosphere our annual Gala creates.”
Attendees can expect fashion parades, live music, DJs, roving performers and more – all while sipping on a range of refreshing South Australian beverages including wine, craft beer, cider, gin, cocktails and sangria.
The free family-friendly event will feature cooking demonstrations with local chef and 2016 Master Chef finalist Heather Day along with fun-filled children’s entertainment from The Amazing Drumming Monkeys (thanks to Flinders Private Hospital), cycling craft, face painters and bike balloon artists.
In partnership with the Australian Migrant Resource Centre, the Gala is hosting a World Music Stage featuring entertainment from a diverse range of international performers hailing from countries all over the globe – everywhere from Lebanon and Syria to Greece and Ghana.
As always fashion will play a major part in the 2018 Gala with parades (at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm) featuring clothing and accessories from some of the City of Unley’s most iconic designers and boutiques – including Tiff Manuell, Paige Rowe, Blue Illusion, CaVa, Cable Melbourne, Denim & Cloth, Designer Exchange, Move Over Menswear, Wild Child and Willywags.
The Unley Gourmet Gala will be held on Tuesday, January 16, from 5pm to 10pm. Festivities for Stage 2 of the Santos Tour Down Under will kick off from 9.30am on Wednesday, January 17, with a breakfast and on-street entertainment from the Unley Concert Band before the peloton leaves for Stirling at 11am.
