Tonight, Adelaide Food Central was invited to Gelatissimo Norwood for a gelati masterclass and to try their two new flavours. Gelatissimo started in Sydney in 2002 and is now the largest gelato franchise in the world. Gelatissimo have 41 stores in Australia and 16 international. They provide their customers around 40 flavours and introduce one new flavour each month. Gelatissimo have opened four stores in Adelaide; Norwood, Gouger Street, Rundle Street and Glenelg.
Tony and Gino, the owners of Gelatissimo Norwood, introduced us to the wonderful world of gelato. Tony explained to us the main differences between gelato and icecream and gave us some background on the gelato culture in Italy. Italian people have a strong passion for food and gelato and this passion can be seen through Gelatissimo’s beautiful range of creative flavours. We were also taught how to make our own gelato and we were introduced to the brilliant machine that churns the icy product each day. One of the main appealing attributes of Gelatissimo is the bright vibrant coloured gelato that jumps out at you on display. I was surprised to know that all Gelatissimo products are made with no artificial colours or flavours. Each and every colour you see will be made with different types of fruits and natural products with no preservatives added. The most interesting thing I learnt today was that to gain the bright purple colour of Branch’s cupcake (the new flavour), beetroot was used. This shone a whole new light on Gelatissimo products, as many people are very conscious about the things they put into their bodies.
The two new flavours that we sampled were created for the new kids movie Trolls. The first we tasted was Poppies’ Frosting – bubble gum gelato with flowers and sparkles. The second flavour was Branch’s Cupcake gelato with true colour and sprinkles. At first glance one may come to think that these flavours will create a sweet and sickly taste. To our surprise the flavours were very creamy and produce a more subtle flavour than the overall look of the gelato.
