With two vegetarian and vegan cafes side by side, Bent Street has always been a place where the healthy congregate. Located in the space that was once Joy Discovery is now Ayla’s Cafe. The menu offers pretty much everything the former cafe cooked up and more. There is a great mix of vegetarian and vegan dishes in the form of sandwiches, salads, pies etc. Named after the owner’s mother, the two brothers that run this business are passionate cooks and use on the best, locally sourced ingredients.
Today, I started off with the Vegan Sausage Roll. Finely minced vegetables were rolled up in a golden flaky pastry. Now I’m one of those people that love everything with tomato sauce, and with this dish, it holds particularly true. The pastry goes so well with the tomato sauce, it wouldn’t have mattered what the filling was.
Next was the Falafel Platter with hummus and fresh salad. Coming in a serve of three, the falafels have a soft, delicate, vegetable filling surrounded by a crunchy coating. The hummus was smooth and delicate, while the tabouli and salad used fresh ingredients with just the right amount of vinaigrette dressing applied.
As I always say, no meal is complete without dessert. The Vegan Brownie is absolutely amazing! The texture is smooth and silky, almost like a chocolate mousse. It’s simply rich, decadent and addictive! A must have dessert!
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t normally go to vegetarian or vegan eateries, but this one I’ll make an exception for. The food is freshly made, healthy and appropriately priced. With fast, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere, it’s no wonder why all the health conscious pay this place a visit.
