Those familiar with the story of Pinocchio would know that Gepetto is the name of the fictional woodcarver. The name has also been used for an Italian restaurant in Hahndorf, which is now over a year old. Co-owner, Mick Romeo has spent decades in hospitality and has mastered the art of pizza making, while Head Chef, Domenic Martino has worked in the kitchen of Adelaide’s most reputable restaurants. The menu offers a range of pizza, pasta and risotto with only the freshest, local produce used.
To start off with, I had the Linguini Con Granchio. A favourite that I order at every Italian restaurant where available. The pasta was served in a generous amount and was perfectly al dente. Generous amounts of sweet blue swimmer crab meat was mixed into the creamy tomato sauce, and there was not a single crab shell in sight. A delicious, well executed dish.
Next was the Mediterranean Pizza which had salami, mushrooms, roasted capsicums and olives. The amount of toppings were generous and well distributed over the pizza. The saltiness from the olives and salami were balanced by the natural sweetness of the roasted capsicums. The star of the show was the pizza base; possibly one of the best I’ve had. It was sufficiently thick, chewy on the outside and fluffy in the centre. It’s kind of hard to describe without actually having it. Take it from me, it was great!
For an authentic Italian experience in the Adelaide Hills, you really need to visit Gepetto’s. The staff were friendly, and the service was fast and efficient. The Linguini Con Granchio was $28.90 and the 12 inch Mediterranean Pizza was $25.50, which is typically priced for Hahndorf. Gepetto’s certainly gets my thumbs up.
Gepetto’s is open from lunch and dinner from Thursday to Sunday, and open for breakfast on weekends.
