Hermanos Cubanos

Hermanos Cubanos is a quaint little cafe and take away that has just opened up on Henley Square. The name “Hermanos Cubanos” literally translates to “brothers Cuban sandwiches” which is a fairly accurate description of the business. Run by two brothers who have extensive experience in hospitality, the main offerings are Cuban sandwiches. There are 7 types to choose from with a selection of international flavours including Cuban, Italian, Spanish and Italian. There is even a breakfast and vegetarian option to make it complete. If those don’t take your fancy, there are a selection of hot dogs (Franks), mashed items (Smash), fries and sides.

For lunch, I had the Hermano Cubanos which consists of jerk chicken, avocado salsa criolla, Swiss cheese and chipotle mayonnaise. The dish arrived after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The criolla was light and refreshing with the main elements being the smooth and creamy avocado and the natural sweetness of the Spanish onion. The melted Swiss cheese held all the ingredients together while the chipotle mayonnaise had a subtle spiciness which added more depth. The star of the show was the jerk chicken which was simply amazing. The thigh fillets were well seasoned, juicy and succulent, and the smokey flavours in the meat were out of this world. The only issue I had was a bit of sinew in the chicken thigh fillet.

While I can’t say I’ve ever had a Cuban sandwich before I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was. The focus of this place is on healthy sandwiches to which they certainly deliver. Instead of having fish and chips out on the beach, there is now a more healthier and delicious option. The ingredients used are fresh and the filling combinations have been well thought out. At $12 for a Cuban sandwich, it won’t break the bank and it’s certainly worth it just for the experience.

Certainly worth checking out when you’re down at Henley Beach!

Stale and dry sandwich that was overpriced. I wouldn’t recommend.
