The Playford Restaurant is located on the ground floor of the luxurious Playford Hotel situated in the heart of the city along North Terrace. The Playford Restaurant has won a suite of accolades including ‘Best Restaurant – Accommodation Division’ at the AHA SA Awards from 2011-2015 and ‘Best Restaurant in a Hotel’ at the SA Restaurant and Catering Awards in 2011-2013 and 2015. Whilst the award-winning Playford Restaurant offers an a la carte style dinner menu, the restaurant also offers a buffet breakfast. Adelaide Food Central was invited to test out the Playford Restaurant’s long-standing and well-known buffet breakfast. The restaurant itself has a very regal feel about it with exquisite chandeliers and marble pillars. We had the pleasure of being seated at a window table overlooking North Terrace.
The first thing you notice upon approaching the buffet is an array of freshly-made juices, ranging from traditional orange juice, to an asparagus, celery, apple, spinach and lemon blend and my personal favourite the strawberry, apple, ginger and watermelon juice; perfectly refreshing and ‘oh-so-fruity’! I kept going back for a refill of this particular juice. The Playford believes “that fine food should be good for you” and in line with this statement the restaurant uses local, organic, bio-dynamic and chemical-free produce where possible, including B.-d. Farm Paris Creek organic full-cream and fat-reduced milk.
Next in line is a vast array of cereals, grains and nuts. I was particularly impressed with the range of cereals on offer, many of the choices I had never heard of, but they sure sounded tasty. Here you will find an Aussie icon, Weet-Bix, a goji berry and cranberry muesli with cacao nibs, cornflakes and your more traditional toasted muesli with hazelnuts and pepitas… the list goes on. Coupled with the cereals were a selection of roasted nuts, including pistachios, almonds and cashews. I decided to try the high protein cereal which contained freeze-dried pomegranate. I teamed this with some organic skim milk, natural yoghurt, a drizzle of Kangaroo Island honey and South Australian fresh strawberries topped with berry compote. Not elegant on the eye, but delicious anyway!
The buffet also includes an extensive array of cold produce, including freshly sliced seasonal fruits (citrus, kiwi fruit, pineapple, rockmelon, honeydew, strawberries, grapes and banana), mini chia puddings, antipasto selections, yoghurts and house made Bircher muesli topped with grated green apple. Mr L opted to start with a delightfully coloured plate of fresh fruit atop the house made Bircher muesli.
The final stop on the buffet train is a vast selection of traditional hot breakfast accompaniments. Where do I start, there’s exotic mushrooms with spinach, onions and water chestnuts, golden hash browns, seasonal greens, fried tomatoes, free-range scrambled eggs, bacon rashers, meatballs, sausages and quinoa beans as a vegetarian option. In addition, eggs can be cooked to your liking by placing your order with a staff member. Mr L followed his cold selection by a plate of hot breakfast foods.
There is also an option of purchasing additional menu items at a small nominal fee. Such dishes include an omelette made with two eggs and your choice of fillings, a clean-eating super smoothie or French toast. Being the sweet tooth I am I opted for the French toast which consisted of a croissant brioche served with vanilla whipped mascarpone and berries. This was a sweet and scrumptious finale to my buffet feast.
Of course the breakfast experience wouldn’t be complete without freshly prepared tea and coffee, toast (with an option of gluten-free bread), croissants and other sweet pastries, crumpets and a selection of jams and spreads.
The Playford Restaurant is open for breakfast seven days a week and caters for all dietary requirements. The buffet breakfast will set you back $35 for the full buffet breakfast option, which includes both hot and cold selections, or $30 for a continental breakfast comprising the cold foods only. The staff at the Playford are friendly and accommodating and provide prompt service. The Playford Restaurant buffet breakfast is a great option for special occasions or for when you simply feel like dining (and eating) like royalty!
Adelaide Food Central would like to thank the Playford Restaurant for their kind hospitality at breakfast. All food and drinks were provided free of charge.
