All the pastry lovers of Adelaide would already be familiar with Red Door Bakery who have stores in Croydon and Goodwood. City workers can now get a taste of the action with the opening of a new store on Grenfell Street. Sitting in their warmers are 5 types of gourmet pies and 2 types of sausage rolls. They also sell sandwiches, sweets and a range of beverages.
The decor is modern and well presented with the white tiling and low hanging light fittings making a regular appearance in new establishments these days. Set in a corner position of a building, there is plenty of natural light flowing through its frontages, but having said that, the place is very well lit.
For lunch, I had their classic Wakefield Grange Beef Pie. The filling contained lean chunks of tender well seasoned beef smothered in a thick rich gravy. The pastry, I thought, could have been a bit flakier. Without a doubt it would have tasted better had it been straight out of the oven.
The staff were very friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed, even with the constant flow of city workers walking in and out. Pricing is reasonable with the pie setting me back $6, a bargain if you’re buying lunch in the city.
Most people will agree that Red Door is one of the best bakeries in Adelaide. What are your thoughts?
