If reviews are anything to go by, the Henley Beach Hotel is a place that you’ll love or hate. As far as location goes, it’s perfect as you’re right on the Esplanade and the bistro dining area has views of the sea. The thing that appealed to me was their weekday lunch special where you get 25% off the food bill. I don’t want to spend too much money, particularly if the food isn’t any good. The menu is fairly standard and is divided into starters, salads, pub favourites, seafood and steak.
The decor in the bistro area looks a little dated, however, there is plenty of seating both inside and in the small outdoor area facing the beach. There is plenty of natural light coming into from two voids in the dining area and the floor to ceiling windows looking towards the sea.
For lunch, I had the Henley Burger which came out 10 minutes after ordering. The presentation was good and the burger had good height. The beef pattie looked a bit underdone but the meat was well seasoned and juicy. The bacon was fried until crisp (which is just the way I like it), while the egg was fried for too long, such that the yolk was no longer runny. The tomato was ripe and juicy, and the lettuce was fresh and crisp. There was a bit too much caramelised onion in this burger and the relish indicated on the menu was missing. The bun was nice and firm, and held all the ingredients in well.
The staff were really friendly, and the service was quick and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed with the 80’s tunes playing in the background. The burger normally costs $18.90 but after discount was $14.20. All their other dishes are pretty much on par with nearby competing pubs with mains ranging from $18.90 to $27.90.
The burger I had was a decent size but it was average in terms of taste.
