In my quest to the find the best Vietnamese Roast Pork Roll in Adelaide, I stumble upon Convenience on Daws which is half convenience store and half Vietnamese take away. Open Monday to Saturday during the day, this place offers 4 types of Vietnamese rolls, noodles, curries, salads, cold rolls, soups and snacks.
The place is neat and well presented, but the only dining facilities are a couple of tables and chairs outside. I like the fact that all the employees handling the food wear gloves and hair nets, and there is one person manning the cash register.
For lunch, I ordered the Roast Pork Roll which is made fresh at the time of ordering. One thing I did notice was they sliced the bread from the top down. This actually means they put less filling in because the depth from top down is less than the depth sideways.
The roast pork was well marinated and a generous amount was added, however, it was a little dry and the pork skin wasn’t as crunchy as I would have hoped. There was a thin spread of egg mayonnaise but the pate was notably absent. The pickled carrot was sweet and tangy, and the cucumber added a nice crunchy texture. The coriander was fresh and the fresh chilli packed some good heat. The bread roll was a disappointment as it wasn’t crusty at all.
The staff were friendly and the service was good. The cost of my roll was $4.50 which is one of the cheapest in Adelaide. Everything else on their menu is cheap too with all meals under $10.
The Roast Pork Roll wasn’t perfect but for $4.50, who am I to complain?
