There’s definitely a lack of Vietnamese roll shops along the beach side suburbs, however, if you’re down the Henley Beach way, The Family Bakery has all your bases covered. It’s only natural that a Vietnamese bakery progresses into selling meat filled Vietnamese rolls because they’re already making the bread. Of course, if you’re feeling like something else, they also offer a selection of pies, pasties, sweets and cakes.
The bakery is small and the service area looks in need of an upgrade. There’s a table for two inside should you choose to sit down and eat, but otherwise, it’s a place primarily for take away customers.
For lunch, I had the Roast Pork Roll. I suspect to minimise the fat, the skin and meat were separated. The pork skin was perfectly crunchy, however, the pork, for the most part lean, was bland. The coriander was fresh and the cucumber added a nice crunchy texture. The pickled carrots were sweet and tangy, and the fresh chilli added plenty of excitement. A generous amount of egg mayonnaise was applied, however, the pate was notably absent. The bread roll was crusty which was to be expected from a bakery.
The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The cost of the Roast Pork Roll was $5.70 which was good, however, I thought the roll was average at best.
