There was a time when I wouldn’t even contemplate paying $10 for a cheese toastie, merely because they’re so simple to make. I’ve even been to an upmarket place that flogs them off for $20 a pop, so I guess there are people out there that have more dollars than sense.
Cheese toasties are becoming more readily available around Adelaide at the moment. Some sell the most basic version, however, other places such as Cheesy Street, which comes in the form of a food truck, offers a selection of gourmet cheese toasties. There are 4 varieties to choose from which change quite regularly.
Today, I had the Notorious P.I.G. which comes with slow cooked barbecue pulled pork and monterey jack cheese. The pulled pork was well marinated, tender and succulent, and had a subtle sweetness about it. The cheese was smooth, creamy with a mild sharp flavour which complemented the pork well. The toastie was grilled to dark golden brown such that it was firm and crusty.
The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. As mentioned earlier, all their toasties on this day were $10 each, although the one I had was particularly good and well worth the cost.
I used to complain about paying $10 for a toastie, but this one I can stomach.
