Cos Restaurant

 

Set in a heritage listed building on the beautifully restored Leigh Street is Cos Restaurant. The venue is spacious and elegant, and the whole setting is full of character. The use of timber throughout simply gives this place an old world charm. The menu is simple with a selection of modern Australian, seafood and steak dishes.

If the complimentary bread is anything to go by, you know you’re in for an enjoyable meal. The bread is nice and warm as though it was freshly baked. The texture is similar to eating a scone and the bread size is decent. The olive oil to balsamic vinegar ratio is too much in favour of the oil, but the bread is the winner here.

Tonight, I ordered the Black Angus Fillet. The 250g steak was lean, juicy and perfectly cooked. The meat had a nice pinkish tinge in the centre and the texture was soft and buttery. This was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. It was a pity that the steak doesn’t come with anything, and anyone ordering one is essentially required to order some sides to make it a proper meal.

The chips tasted like they were double fried. Nice and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.

The Broccolini was perfectly cooked. The vegetable was firm and crisp, and the addition of almonds provided a nice crunchy texture.

The other members of the group were quite content with their dishes with the exception of the friend who chose the Prawn dish. He likened it to a prawn salad with too few prawns.

The staff were friendly and inviting, and the service was just short of outstanding. Drinks were constantly refilled, menu items were explained and plates were cleared as we finished. The only thing they forgot to do was put cloth napkins on our laps. The atmosphere was relaxed which is what you would expect from fine dining. The pricing is on the expensive side with my steak costing $39. At this place, if you order a steak, a steak is all you get. Quite surprising considering the price point. The waitress also said that one serve of chips was sufficient for a group of four, which it wasn’t.

The food was quite exceptional here and good enough justify the high price. Not a flawless evening but impressive none the less. I will definitely be back, especially for a special occasion.
