I’ve heard good things about the Bakery on O’Connell. While looking for a lunch destination, I thought it was time to check it out. Open 24 hours a day, this bakery is conveniently located at the beginning of O’Connell Street, where night time revellers can grab a bite to eat to help soften their hangovers.
There are pros and cons with 24 hour bakeries. The obvious advantage is the convenience of them always being open, however, with them being open all the time, you have to wonder how fresh the products are. As far as choice goes, this place is impressive. With 23 types of pastries and 33 types of sweets, making a choice is often a difficult one.
Today, I ordered the Spinach, Potato and Tomato Square. The square was of a decent size, but from it’s appearance, it looked as though it was cooked several hours ago. The square was warm but not piping hot. The spinach, potato and tomato were soft and the ingredients worked well together. The pastry was nice and flaky, and overall, it wasn’t too bad.

For dessert, I had the Flower Pot Cupcake. The cupcake was soft and moist, and the texture was smooth and buttery. I could tell this cake was freshly baked. The icing and the lolly pop were nice for presentation, but the cake itself was the winner here.

As far pricing goes, you can get some sort of sustenance here for under $5. This is a bargain when you compare it to everywhere else. When one goes searching for hangover food in the early hours of the morning, this place is definitely an option. The alternative is the deep fried foods from the fish and chip shops across the road. Your arteries are going to get clogged one way or another, so take your pick!
