Kangaroo Island’s award-winning South Australian distillery masterclass, showcased Kangaroo Island spirits in the city. KIS wanted to give those who can’t make it across to Kangaroo Island an opportunity to sample their spirits and discover ways to utilise premium spirits.

The evening session aimed to educate guests on the origins and methods of production of Kangaroo Island Spirits. These Masterclasses have been designed by Jon and Sarah Lark from KIS, who established Australia’s first boutique Gin distillery in 2006. Jon and Sarah have stayed on with the business as a brand ambassadors following its sale to Founders First.

The Larks were originally inspired to make Gin which reflected the landscape they live in on Kangaroo Island. For example, the KIS O’Gin is influenced by the infusion of coastal daisy bush found on the island called ‘Olearia axillaris’ which imparts sweet piney notes. The volatile oils of this plant also have notes of tropical fruits. In the O’Gin, it marries with the juniper and is spiced with Asian long and cubeb peppers. This bold savoury Gin is balanced with fresh South Australian oranges. The O’Gin highlights juniper, coriander & angelica root in a contemporary London style. KIS O’Gin recently won the Contemporary Style Gin Trophy at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London – the only Australian brand to do so in its 50-year history. KIS have since added vodka and liqueurs to their lineup.

The masterclass at Bowden Cellars, was opportunity to taste some of KIS best Gin, the variety of options for tasting included:

WILD GIN 43%

OLD TOM GIN 42.5%

MULBERRY GIN 28%

LIMONCELLO 33%

Along with a grazing platter prepared by the kitchen team, which was the perfect addition to the tasting table.

It was a unique experience, allowing us to delve into the fascinating world of Gin. KI Spirits range of traditional and native botanicals which are sourced on the Island. The Gin education and tasting session was led by an experienced member of the KIS Team, Georgia Kaluza, who guided us through a very comprehensive history of Gin and why KI Spirits are so passionate about Gin. We learnt about the supply of all single botanical distillates and what’s involved in blending Gin.

Wild Gin: is distilled uniquely with ‘Boobialla’, Kangaroo Island native juniper. Notes include; fresh local limes balanced with the perfume of eau de cologne mint picked from their garden and finished with the warmth of hand harvested pink pepper corns.

Old Tom Gin: is lightly aged for a short period in small re-charred French oak barrels. Old Tom is hand batched in small quantities. The addition of native local aniseed and lemon myrtles add sweet characters to this classic old style Gin. First created to serve at The Tasting Australia Origins Dinner in 2014, KIS Old Tom has gone on to be a champion Gin around the world.

Limoncello: Made with fresh home-grown island Lemon peel, using the traditional Italian method. KI Limoncello imparts the zesty freshness of the skin without the sourness of the pith of flesh.

Mulberry Gin: The historic mulberry tree on Kangaroo Island was the inspiration for KI spirits take on a Sloe Gin. Naturally sweet and boldly tart, rich and smooth mulberry flavours that distinguish this elegant Gin.

Mulberry Bramble Cocktail:

30ml of KIS Mulberry Gin

1 heaped teaspoon of Berry Jam

15ml of Lemon Juice

Soda Water to top
