Nonna and I is a favourite place to visit for the Adelaide Food Central team, and we were really excited when they asked us to sample their new Winter menu. When the passionate Chef Khalil is involved, we know we’re in for a treat. We’ve already talked about the place in three previous reviews so we’ll get straight into the food.
First up was the Coconut and Broccoli Soup. The soup was thick, creamy and full of flavour. I wouldn’t have thought to combine those two specific ingredients together, but the genius Chef Khalil made it work. A real taste sensation!
Slow cooked beef cheeks comes in two versions; the healthy and the classic version. The healthy version is the Slow Cooked Beef Cheeks with sweet potato, broccoli in reduced sweet wine jus. The beef cheeks were tender and succulent, and simply fell apart. The meat was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The sweet potato had a lovely natural sweetness which was well complemented by the jus. A nice simple and rustic dish.
The classic version comes with garlic mashed potato instead of the sweet variety. The potato is soft and creamy and is loaded with generous amounts of garlic. Out of the two beef cheek dishes, I preferred this one.
The final dish was the Sesame Seed Yellow Fin Tuna with creamy garlic mashed potato in a sweet orange and ginger sauce. The tuna was seared to a dark golden brown and its centre was raw with a light pinkish tinge. The flavour of toasted sesame seeds was unique to this dish, as was the subtly sweet sauce.
Chef Khalil has achieved so much in his career and its his travels, love of food and passion for cooking that makes him so good at what he does. The existing menu still remains the same but the addition of the Winter menu selection will certainly add some variety in the colder months.
If you haven’t been to Nonna and I yet, now is the time!
