For a long time, Lucky Lupitas has been known as one of the best Mexican restaurants in Adelaide. Previously located at Bedford Park, loyal customers would struggle to find a car park just to eat their food. Making way for South Road extensions, Lucky Lupitas was forced to move and has since opened a transit store in North Adelaide. Open on the busy O’Connell Street cafe precinct, the popular Mexican eatery still offers all the favourites we’ve come to know and love.
For starters today, I had Lucky’s Elote. This is grilled corn on the cob with chipotle mayonesa, cheese and lime. The corn kernels were firm and juicy with lovely smokey flavours. The corn was coated in a thick cheese powder which had a subtle saltiness. This was balanced by the natural sweetness of the corn.
Next was the Hamburguesa. A burger made from a hand pressed beef pattie with lettuce, tomato and a habanero orange sauce. I’ve found that some of the best burgers around are simple and have few ingredients. This one was no different. The beef pattie was thick and had the same diameter as the bun. The meat was well seasoned, juicy and cooked to perfection. A bite into the pattie revealed a slightly pinkish centre which is what I like to see. The cheese was nicely melted over the patty, and the vegetables were fresh and crisp. The bun was nice and firm, and held all the ingredients in well. So simple and so delicious.
Finally, I had the Lucky Ribs in a chipotle BBQ sauce. The beef ribs are slow cooked for 24 hours and the meat simply falls off the bone. The beef was swimming in a subtly sweet chipotle BBQ sauce. There was sauce and rice under the meat, but the ribs were clearly the star of the show.
The Lucky Lupitas transit store in North Adelaide is a real blessing for those who don’t want to travel down south for great Mexican food. Getting a car park is so much easier, and the pricing of the food is quite reasonable considering the quality and serving sizes.
It’s so nice having Lucky Lupitas so close to home and I’m already planning my next visit.
