In some ways, O’Connell Street is like The Parade with the number of Italian restaurants down the one street. The latest to open it’s doors on the busy cafe precinct is Ciciliano’s. The menu is predominantly Italian with mains, pastas, pizzas, calzone and risottos.
The decor is modern and well presented with nice earthy colour tones. The establishment can easily fit 50 on the inside and a dozen more on the footpath. The glass bifold doors allow plenty of natural light to flow through making this place light and airy during the day.
As a starter, we had Garlic Bread which came out 10 minutes after ordering. The bread was home made with a crusty exterior and soft spongey centre. The bread was s0aked with butter and lightly sprinkled with parsley. While there was fresh garlic somewhere in the mix, I thought it could have done with more.
As a main, I had the Penne Puttanesca. This dish was really well executed. The saltiness from the olives, capers and anchovies complemented the heat from the chilli and sweetness from the tomato sauce. The penne pasta was al dente, and the dish as a whole was satisfying.
My friend had the Garlic Prawns. She said the prawns were perfectly cooked in the rich creamy sauce. The rice was firm with nice individual grains, and the vegetables were cooked just right. It wasn’t the best Garlic Prawns she’s ever had but it was certainly above average.
The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the service was good. Drinks arrived promptly, meals arrived on time and plates were cleared as we finished. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was average. The cost of the Garlic Bread was $5.50, the Puttanesca $18 and the Garlic Prawns $24.
Personally, I think their offerings are too similar to their nearby competitors, but they’re certainly not bad at what they do.
