The Adelaide Food Central team braved the sweltering heat that made Adelaide the hottest place in the world and accepted the invitation to the annual Clapham Junction Charity Event. A collaboration of four local businesses in Clapham, the goal of this event is to donate 100% of their proceeds from this fundraiser to the Hutt Street Centre and thereby provide support to those who are going through the tough phase of homelessness.
Consisting of the partnership of Eire Café, St James Quality Meats, Watermark Cards, Star Haircutters and Dreamweaver, these shops ooze with a real community feel, where positivity and support are offered in exchange for the services they have kindly offered via this event.
Despite the soaring temperatures, there was a sense of festivity and homeliness that we felt at the event. The hosts of the events were incredibly hospitable and friendly and catered to our needs splendidly. Staff from each of the four local businesses was working hard in setting up the event and cooking a feast for the crowd as they poured in towards the end of the day. Entertainment provided by That No Good Thief and Urban Residential helped in further adding to the vibrancy of this beautiful event.
There were a number of mouth-watering dishes that were being prepared fresh and drinks (including beer, wine, soda, and water) were available as refreshments to make the Adelaide heatwave a bit more tolerable.
I have a lot of respect for the chefs who were cooking the pig on a spit and the lamb on the spit out in the 44 degree Celsius heat. Upon trying the meat (particularly the lamb one), it felt like pure ecstasy. While the crackle may not have been super ‘crackly’ for my liking, it still had that tang of crispiness that made it worth the bite!
Apart from the superstar meats, we were treated to a selection of salads. Being a pumpkin lover, I really enjoyed the Roast Pumpkin Salad. The salad had the right balance of sweet and savoury, and the pumpkin was roasted to perfection. There were also trays of Cheese Pasties as well which tasted fantastic.
Overall, this event has been a spectacular success over the past couple of years and with such a great goal, it is no surprise that this won’t be the last we see of the Clapham Junction Charity event. With incredible hospitality, fantastic music and entertainment, and food and drinks that are sure to fill up our hungry tummies, it makes sense to contribute towards this brilliant event and do what we can to help those less fortunate than us who are going through a tough time with homelessness.
With the next charity event being 12 months away, now’s the time to add this event to your calendar for fun summery times at a real community event at Clapham!
