Parsec Cafe

Hindley Street is slowly being revitalised with a string of new bars and cafes being opened along this notoriously seedy strip. Format Collective, which was once on Peel Street, has opened the new Parsec Cafe, a place that is also used as a shop, gallery and venue.

The space is open plan with lovely high ceilings. The windows allow plenty of natural light to flow through giving this place a casual relaxed vibe. The natural earthy colour tones provide a sense of warmth and make it ideal for sitting back and relaxing with a cup of coffee.

At the time of writing there were just under a dozen food offerings not including the specials. Many of the dishes would be best described as classic with a twist. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available and appropriately labelled on the menu.

For lunch, I ordered the Avocado and Feta on Rye. The dish was ready after a 15 minute wait and was very well presented. Generous amounts of soft, creamy avocado sat on top of toasted rye bread. The contrast in textures of the two ingredients was a real highlight. The saltiness of the feta was balanced by the sweetness of the balsamic vinegar. The dish was so simple yet so delicious.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. Pricing is reasonable with dishes starting from $5 and going all the way up to $12. The dish I had was $10 and was surprisingly filling. As Hindley Street slowly transforms, Parsec Cafe is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
