Adelaide Food Central was invited by Fox Creek Wines (Fox Creek Cellar Door Gallery) in McLaren Vale to sample some of their wines and regional produce. As well as an opportunity to view colourful artworks by Roe Gartelmann all of which were inspired by her time spent living on the Fleurieu Peninsula over a span of three decades. All food and drink were provided free of charge.
Each of the platters were designed to beautifully complement the Fox Creek Wines. Each platter had a South Australian cheese as the focus and were all provided by Blessed Cheese in McLaren Vale. The Adel Blue cheese was the centrepiece here. We were told to spread a small piece of the blue cheese onto a cracker, along with some of the Fonzi’s brandied figs and the Callebaut 70% chocolate chips. I am not usually a fan of blue cheese but its intensity and richness of the creamy flavours was balanced by the sweetness of the figs. The dark chocolate also added a pleasant bitter layer to this combination of flavours. Altogether these different ingredients deliciously complimented each other incredibly well. The sweetness and crispness of the Vixen shiraz sparkling really worked well with the platter. It had flavours of liquorice, sweet blackberry and if I am not mistaken, subtle hints of chocolate. It was deep, full bodied and very indulgent.
My favourite cheese of the night was this Alexandrina Jersey Gouda. I generally prefer harder cheese over the soft cheese varieties. It was aromatic and it had a beautiful smooth, silky texture that was perfect for slicing. The savoury flavour was delicious. The Harris smoked salmon was perfectly smoked to emphasise its subtle textures and flavours.
I must point out that the Tuckers Crackers here are the most delicious gourmet crackers I have ever had. They are very simple yet very tasty and had a nice pleasant crunch. The Udder Delights Chevre had a lovely subtle flavour with a nice creamy, smooth texture. It was lovely and mild with slight acidic undertones from the fresh goat cheese.
The occasion was a great opportunity for us to be able to escape the hustle and bustle of inner city life to the peacefulness that is of McLaren Vale. It is a real gem that this state has up for offer. We thank the staff at Fox Creek Cellar Door Gallery for their generosity and kindness and of course Roe Gartelmann for allowing us an exclusive look into her collection of colourful artworks.
