A lot of people that I know love to eat out, but this favourite past time can lead to an expanding waistline. Places like the Walnut Bar, are part of a trend of healthy eateries that are opening across Adelaide. Located in The Market Shed every Sunday morning, the founders, Amber and Tanya, have brought together a selection of burgers, raw desserts and nutty milkshakes, which they would have themselves at home. The ingredients are organic and locally sourced, and the offerings are gluten and dairy free.
Unlike many of the other stalls in The Market Shed, the Walnut Bar has it’s own private little space. There are a handful of seats to the side of the front entrance but plenty more outside the shop.
Today, I had the Sweet Potato and Chickpea Burger. Made as you order, these burgers are of a decent size and the presentation wasn’t too bad either. The natural sweetness of the beetroot and sweet potato was well balanced by the nutty buttery texture of the chickpeas. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, and all the ingredients were brought together by a deliciously subtly sweet relish.
For a drink, I had their Vanilla Bean Nut Milk. It’s like a nutty version of soy milk. Very light and healthy.
The staff were really friendly and it was great to get a bit of background on how the business started. The service was good and the pricing was reasonable. Their burgers ranged from $10.50 to $14, and their nut milks are $6.50. The burger that I had was $10.50, which is a bargain in anyone’s language.
Next time you catch up with friends at The Market Shed, be sure to check this place out!
