Black Bull was first established back in 1838 when Adelaide was first colonised. In 1949, it was renamed the Berkley Hotel, and it was only in recent times that the hotel reverted back to it’s original name. Located on the northern side of Hindley Street, Black Bull is the sister pub to the Woolshed on Hindley. They have a simple breakfast menu, and grilled meats, pizza, burgers and salad from midday onwards.

As you enter the Black Bull, there is a gaming area to the left hand side behind the bar, dining space straight down the middle and a beer garden in an alley down the right hand side. The leather seating, timber tables and exposed brickwork bring out the character of yesteryear, although the dining space down the back is a bit dark and dingy.

For lunch, I ordered the Black Bull Wagyu Beef Burger. The meal arrived 15 minutes after ordering and was nicely presented. The beef patty was well marinated and had lovely char grilled flavours, but the meat was dry and overcooked. The sweetness of the tomato relish was balanced by the sourness of the thinly sliced gherkins. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, and the aioli had a lovely thick consistency with strong notes of garlic. The bun was firm and toasted, but a little on the chewy side.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was on par with other pubs. The cost of the burger was $18 which wasn’t too bad. Had they cooked the meat right and changed the bun, it would have been a darn good burger.
