Mazzoni Gelato

The competition for the dessert dollar is certainly getting tough down Rundle Street with the opening of Mazzoni Gelato down the eastern end. The point of difference at this place is that they offer biodynamic artisan gelato, with “biodynamic” referring to the method of organic farming that holistically views the farm as a self nourishing system.

Getting down the nitty gritty, there are 9 types of gelato and 3 types of sorbet on offer. The gelati isn’t house made but supplied from a place down Gilbert Street. On top of that, there are 4 beverages to choose from.

I’m not sure whether this is the style, but the store looks like a half renovated job. The use of white tiles is very popular nowadays and the exposed brickwork gives this place a warehouse feel. At the time of my visit, there were only a handful of seats around the front bar area and by the window.

Prior to ordering, I was sampling most of the flavours to decide which ones I liked. I have to say that many of the flavours that were tasted were rather average. The flavours I ended up choosing were the Hazelnut and Cookies & Cream.

The store attendant was very friendly and her customer service was excellent. The owner on the hand acted a little grumpy when it came time to pay. One scoop of gelato will cost you $4.50, two scoops $8 and 3 scoops $11. This is pricier than their competitors but on par with the likes of Ben & Jerry’s. Unfortunately, their gelati flavours on offer were rather average.

WHERE: Shop 3, 300 Rundle St, Adelaide
