Kathmandu Palace

Kathmandu Palace is located in a lovely historical building on Nile Street in Glenelg. Conveniently located on a side street, there was plenty of street parking to be found, particularly if you come here straight after work.

Anybody familiar with Nepalese cuisine would know of it’s strong Indian influences as seen in its menu. The offerings are not overly extensive with a small selection of appetisers, charcoal clay oven cooked dishes, meat and fish, and vegetarian items.

The main restaurant area occupies the ground floor area and seats roughly 50 people. Having said that, the space is small and it’s easy to feel cramped in this place. The dining area is nicely decked out and the white table cloths add a touch of elegance.

For dinner, I ordered the Khasi Tarkari which is a lamb curry cooked in blended bahra masala. The dish came out less than 15 minutes after ordering and was nicely presented. The lamb was well marinated, tender and succulent, and the flavours were well infused into the meat. The sauce had a nice thick consistency with slightly sour undertones.

My friend ordered the Badami Kukhura which is a butter chicken. The chicken was tender and succulent, and had wonderful smokey flavours. Like the previous dish, bahra masala was used. Tomato is then added to this dish to give it a lovely orange colour.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was very good. Drinks were constantly refilled, meals arrived promptly and were taken away as we finished. The atmosphere was relaxed and it almost felt like a formal dining experience.

I understand that there is an overhead when you’re dining in a restaurant because you have to pay for staff and other things, but the price difference for my main between take away and dine in is $7. Personally, I thought the take away prices are more in line with what you should be paying. The cost of the lamb curry I ordered was $23.90 with another $2 for steamed rice. While there was nothing wrong with the dishes, the servings were rather small for a main.

Having been to many of the Nepalese restaurants in Adelaide, I would say this is one of the better ones.
