800 Degrees

The last two businesses at this specific location have been pizzerias. Considering there is a large wood oven built into the store, it’s only natural that 800 Degrees provide similar offerings. On top of the usual pasta, calzone and sweets, this place has jumped onto the burger bandwagon with a selection of eight of their own.

The decor here is a big improvement to what was here previously. The space has been better utilised to fit in more tables and chairs, and from the way they’re configured, you’re not bumping into your neighbours.

The use of timber is prominent with a consistent combination of black and brown throughout. From the moment you walk through the door, you can’t help feel the relaxed casual vibe about the place.

Tonight, I ordered the 800 Degrees Pizza which consists of capsicum, feta, pancetta, fresh chilli and garlic, which is then topped with fresh rocket, parmesan shavings and truffle oil.

You know how some Indian or Thai places have chilli symbols next to their dishes, I felt there should have been symbols next to this pizza. One could presume that naming a pizza after the store indicated that it was their signature pizza, but after you take a bite into their fresh red chilli topping, 800 degrees takes on a whole new meaning.

The pizza itself had a good contrasting flavours. The sweetness of the capsicum was balanced by the saltiness of feta and pancetta. The rocket was fresh and crisp, while the chilli added some serious excitement.

The pizza base was nice and thin, and equivalent to a Domino’s classic crust. From the shape of the pizza, you could tell it was hand made, but it still had a consistent thickness throughout.

I’d have to say it was a well made pizza with good ingredient combination.

My friend ordered the Espanaola which has chorizo, feta, Spanish onion, fresh tomato and roasted pumpkin. Again, the saltiness of the feta is balanced by the sweetness of the Spanish onion and roasted pumpkin to provide good contrasting flavours. While I didn’t actually taste this pizza, I was told it was above average.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. Drinks arrived promptly and plates were cleared as we finished, although our table water bottle did remain empty for some time before it was refilled. The atmosphere was relaxed as there were few customers.

Our small 9 inch pizzas were $16 each which is roughly what you pay for a gourmet pizza elsewhere. Considering they use fresh quality ingredients and are quite generous with their toppings, it represents good value. Their burgers range from $7.90-$12.90, while their larger 15 inch pizzas are mainly at the $24 mark.
