The Rolling Pin – Semaphore

I’ve read good things about The Rolling Pin out in Magill, but I’ve never had the chance to drive out there to check it out. Thanks to their success, they’ve opened two new stores out in the western suburbs, one in Semaphore and the other in Port Adelaide.

The Semaphore store is located right in the heart of the cafe precinct. From what I could see in their display cabinet, they had a selection of tarts and pastries on offer. The products aren’t made on site but transported in from their Port Adelaide store. There are two chalkboards on the main wall behind the counter showcasing their beverages. One chalkboard was blank while the other had a small selection of coffee and teas.

Seating is quite limited at the store due to the amount of space the counter area takes up. You could fit exactly 10 people inside and a couple more outside. The decor is modern industrial with the low hanging light fittings, timber benchtops and tiled splashbacks. Their signature rolling pins are stuck along the main wall, while their fridges are neatly built into the wall at the back.

Today, I ordered the Pistachio and Apple Mousse Tart. The mousse is smooth and velvety, and sits on top of soft delicate pieces of apple. The tart crust is firm with a rich buttery flavour. Half a macaron cookie lays on top of the tart. It has a nice natural green colour and the surface of the cookie is relatively smooth. The outer layer is thin and the inside of the cookie has a soft and chewy texture. The pistachio pieces add a nice crunchy texture, and the tart itself is not overly sweet. This is probably as good as a tart can get.

My friend had the Raspberry and Passionfruit Tart. She said it was really good and was equally impressed as I was.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed, with a steady stream of customers coming in during their lunch break. The cost of the tarts were $3.50 which is fairly reasonable. The tarts aren’t overly huge but they are of a decent quality.
