Stax – Waymouth St

Stax is a restaurant franchise that has been around for over a decade and has 3 stores in the CBD. Their Waymouth Street store is located towards the King William Street end and is set amongst popular pubs, cafes and restaurants.

For me, Stax is like a cross between Subway, a sandwich store and a coffee shop. The food here uses fresh quality locally sourced ingredients and is made to order. There are over a dozen breakfast options to choose from, and there is a decent selection of subs, wraps and sandwiches made with assorted fillings.

Today, I ordered the Reuben Sandwich. The meal arrived 10 minutes after ordering and came in a cardboard tray. The presentation was rather average, and I could tell they were conservative with the fillings. For photography purposes, I actually styled it myself.

The sandwich consisted of three thin layers of tender New York style pastrami that was both salty and peppery. The American mustard was smooth and mild, and worked well with the crunchy and slightly sour sauerkraut. The continental rye bread was lightly toasted but a little on the small side. All in all, a good combination of ingredients based on a classic recipe.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. There’s a strong customer focus here which I really like. When I was standing in the background deciding what to order, I wasn’t ignored as other customers came into the store. The atmosphere was somewhat relaxed with most of their clientele being nearby white collared office workers.

The cost of the Reuben Sandwich was $8.20, which considering it’s size, was slightly overpriced. I’m guessing the rents down Waymouth Street aren’t particularly cheap, so that plays some part. There was nothing particularly wrong with the sandwich, it was just a bit small and could have been better presented.
