Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of burger joints, dessert bars and Mexican eateries open up across Adelaide. The trend this year seems to be South American food and yoghurt stores.

Utoo is a brand new froyo (frozen yoghurt) and dessert store to open up on James Place. They offer both fresh and frozen yoghurt, as well as waffles, churros, fruit salads, smoothies and beverages. I was told that the menu offerings will increase as time goes on. There are 4 types of fresh yoghurt available which are made daily. Due to lack of space, the waffles are made off site but are made fresh each morning.

The first thing you notice about this quaint little place are the numerous light fittings. With constantly changing colours, there’s certainly an element of funkiness about this place. The use of pinks and whites are prominent, and in some respects, it’s like being a kid in a candy store.

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed when I was told the Waffles weren’t made to order, but actually after having one, I changed my mind. Although the waffle was reheated, it was warm and crisp, just as though it was fresh out of the machine. The infused Belgian chocolate inside the waffle was the highlight and the Belgian chocolate sauce was simply icing on the cake. The presentation was immaculate and better than I had anticipated.

The Watermelon Yoghurt was really good. The yoghurt was nice and thick, and you could taste the true flavours of watermelon. With so many toppings to choose from, the choice is a difficult one.

My friend had the Green Tea Latte and said it was a bit of an acquired taste. I didn’t taste it so I can’t comment.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was more than reasonable. The waffles are $5 each which is pretty good considering other dessert places charge over $10.

Verdict: This place does everything right. Worth checking out!
