Kishi Sushi

I’ve been meaning to visit Kishi for quite some time, especially after hearing rave reviews about the place. It’s important to note that Kishi has specials that constantly change, and they’re only available if you’re part of the Kishi mailing list, or are a fan of their Facebook page. When they advertised on Facebook that all plates were $3, I knew what I was having for dinner. There are exceptions to the $3 plates and the staff are on standby to tell you which ones.

You know the mass manufactured chopsticks that you have to snap in half to actually use? Well, they stock the cheaper variety here and when I proceeded to snap my chopsticks, I received a splinter in my finger. Not a great start to the night. Through careful observation of the plates on the sushi train, I noticed they had a lot of the cheaper plates and very few of the dishes that were of any significant value. Fortunately, we were able to order the sushi off the menu, which was much better in the end because freshly made sushi is the bomb.

I’m not going to give you a detailed analysis of each sushi dish that I had, but I will say that the ingredients used here are top notch. The salmon and tuna were fresh. The sushi rice was soft and moist. The avocado wasn’t as ripe as I expected. The teriyaki eel was well marinated and subtle in flavour. The wasabi, soy sauce and pickled ginger were unlimited, although I must say that the wasabi that they use didn’t even clear my sinuses. I used 3 sachets of wasabi with no effect.

As the night progressed, the store got busier and busier. With only one sushi chef working behind the scenes, the sushi plates failed to keep up with demand. At times, I was waiting over 10 minutes for my sushi dish to be freshly prepared. The staff were really friendly and the service could have been better. I’m not a great fan of these sushi train stores as I feel everything is overpriced for what you’re getting. None the less, there is more variety than your typical sushi outlet.

This place is definitely one of the better sushi train places. Definitely worth checking out!
