Marrakech – Hyde Park

The first thing that strikes you about this place is the beautiful decor; The unique star shaped light fittings, the fancy patterns on the exterior windows, the Islamic symbolism, the Persian style wall hung rug and the antique looking ornaments that hang off the walls. Combined with the dim lighting and the Arabic music playing in the background, it really sets the mood for a pleasant evening.

The staff here are very friendly and inviting, particularly the owner, who is also the cook and part of the waiting staff. The owner is a man of many talents and is able to converse fluently in Spanish, Japanese and Arabic. The owner insisted that he would “take care of us” and wanted to choose all of the dishes for the table. We decided against this as this would have lead to an astronomical bill. Instead, each person at the table decided to order one main dish to be shared amongst everyone.

For entree, we had the Special Moroccan bread. It was very similar to a Turkish Pide, but the filling consisted of basil, goats cheese, packaged supermarket cheese and fresh chili. The bread was freshly baked and very tasty. The fresh chili gave it a nice kick.

For the mains, we ordered several lamb, chicken and beef tangines for the group to share. There were basically several tangine flavours on offer with the only difference being the meat type included. In each of the tangines, the meats were well marinated, succulent and tender. The meat would fall apart when touched. My particular favourite was the Tanjia Merrakchia. It was a bit more spicier than the others and it had so much flavour.

After dinner, we ordered some Mint Green Tea. I’m not sure how it’s prepared, but it took a good 20 minutes to arrive. We suspect that the waitress forgot our order and it was actually made when we questioned her. When the tea finally arrived, it came in a unique tea pot. The waitress made a spectacle of it by moving the teapot up and down as she poured the tea into the glasses. The tea was magnificent! It had such a rich minty flavour that was very refreshing. It was almost similar to drinking mint flavoured mouthwash.

The atmosphere here was fantastic and the service was excellent. The quality of the mains was second to none. The serving sizes were huge as the group struggled to finish the dishes. Probably one of the best Moroccan restaurants in Adelaide, although they could improve on their customer service.
