The latest dessert place to open in Adelaide is St Louis House of Fine Ice Cream and Dessert. Located close to the eastern end of Gouger Street, St Louis offers 16 locally made ice creams, as well as a range of hot and cold beverages, churros, cakes, waffles and macarons.
The decor here is classic and stylish; the tiled walls in the kitchen area, the stone bench tops and the elegant timber furnishings, cleverly utilise the small space available. Seating is available for 44 people with 18 on the inside and 26 on the outside. The use of candles on the tables is a very nice touch as it sets an intimate mood.
The staff here are very friendly with one particular store assistant allowing me to try each of the ice cream flavours. In the end, I ordered the Waffle Basket with the St. Louis, Baileys & Scorched Almonds and Salted Caramel ice creams. The basket came on a small paper cup, and each scoop of ice cream was quite substantial. The three ice creams that I picked were delicious individually, however, the Salted Caramel tended to over power the other flavours. I wasn’t a fan of the Waffle Basket itself as it was quite hard, similar to that of a fortune cookie. It was designed that way so that it could hold the ice cream, but that made it difficult to eat. Trying to eat it was also a messy experience.
I must admit, I wasn’t a fan of every single ice cream flavour. I felt some of them were more of an acquired taste. None the less, this place has developed some fairly good recipes that should be bringing the customers back for more. The price point is probably a bit on the higher side, but you are paying for better quality products and a better dining experience. I’m impressed and I recommend people check it out!
