From Found

Last night we had the pleasure to attend the official launch of From Found – Adelaide’s newest pop-up clothing company inspiring ethical fashion and empowering women.

The non-for-profit company started on crowdfunding website Start Some Good from an idea of founder Lauren Bonnet’s in September 2016. The idea was to produce fashion pieces from ‘found’ fabrics – hence the name of the company! These fabrics include reclaimed, recycled, and recovered textiles to create From Found’s unique colour-popping designs.

The company is very clearly run and operated by women for women. Lauren’s personal favourite piece is From Found’s shift dress as its versatile design also has pockets – a highly appreciated feature that men often take for granted!

Lauren, who grew up in Kazakhstan, has always had a passion for working interculturally. Working as a community development worker with new arrivals completing their English language classes, she saw a need to fill a void for the women who would finish their classes and lose their creative outlet. The simple idea of utilising a skill that these women had already mastered – in this case, sewing – soon turned into a business idea.

From Found co-founder, Mardiya Jawad, a refugee from Iraq herself, comes from a social work background and, like Lauren, strives to help empower women. While the two have done a great deal to start up the company, Mardiya and Lauren credit the success of From Found to their community. The company currently has three employees and around fifteen volunteers who do everything from helping in the workshop to PR and marketing.

Lauren and Mardiya’s goal now is to have enough designs ready to begin selling the pieces, starting at the Bowerbird Design Market in November. From Found is also officially launching their first line on Sunday November 5th at a fashion show showcasing all South Australian talent. The fashion show will be held at a secret location to be announced on their Facebook page the week prior so make sure to give their page a like if you don’t want to miss the announcement!
