New Haveli Restaurant

New Haveli is a restaurant located on Grange Road at the former site of Red Lenny’s. I only noticed it while driving past recently and was intrigued by the fact it was an Indian and Italian restaurant. The menu is all Indian but they do offer Italian food when catering. Their offerings are fairly standard for an Indian restaurant with a selection of entrees, curries with your common proteins, vegetarian dishes and accompaniments. The furnishings have changed since it was Red Lenny’s, and some of the pictures hanging off the walls bring about a sense of traditionality to the place.

For lunch, I ordered the Butter Chicken with Biryani Rice. The dishes came out after a 15 minute wait and were nicely presented. The Biryani Rice had rice that was well cooked with nice individual grains. The rice was lightly spiced and you could see the small pieces of onion, tomato and coriander thrown into the mix.

I’ve had my fair share of Butter Chicken at Indian restaurants and I must say that this place does it well. The boneless chicken tikka pieces were tender and succulent, and the flavours were well infused into the meat. The tomato based gravy was thick and creamy, and perfectly spiced. It was so good, I was happy to lick up all the sauce from the bowl.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. Drinks and meals came out promptly which was good to see. The atmosphere was relaxed, but I was the only one in the restaurant at the time. As far as pricing goes, the cost of the meal was $19.40 which is a bit more that what I’d like to pay for lunch, but having said that, these were proper generous servings. They do have a $12 lunch special but I believe that is only for take away.

Based on the dishes I had, I must say this place is very promising. I’ll have to come back another time to try some of their other dishes on offer.
