Handsome & The Duchess

If it wasn’t for social media I wouldn’t have known Handsome & The Duchess existed. Located down a side street off Gawler Place, the signage isn’t particularly great and you have to walk past it to find it. The food menu is small with salads, sandwiches, pastries and sweets on offer.

The decor here reminds me of some of the laneway cafes in Melbourne. The stone cold concrete floors, the recycled timber, the exposed pipework and the open kitchen bring back memories of some over indulging that happened interstate. The place is small and seating is limited to around a dozen people.

For lunch, I had one of their house made Beef Pies which was sitting in their warmers. The meal was available immediately and presented on a small wooden chopping board with cutlery.

The pie had good height and the pastry was a lovely golden brown. The top was nice and flaky, and yet firm enough to hold itself together when cut. The filling contained well flavoured, chunky morsels of tender succulent beef in a thick rich gravy. The only negative was a large chunk of fat in the pie filling.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was reasonable. The salads are $10.90, sandwiches $12.90 and the pie that I had was $6.

This place has a lovely interstate cafe vibe with really quick service.
