Kenny Wang’s

From the same owners as the Wright Street Hotel, is a new pop up bar right next to it called Kenny Wang’s. Anybody that has eaten at the hotel would be familiar with the quality of their meals, and with Kenny Wang’s modern Asian inspired small plates menu, one should expect a similar standard.

From the moment you walk in, you’re bombarded with signs which are inspired by the street lights of Tokyo. The bare area is located at the end of the passage way to the right.

Around the corner are booths and bar stools in a space that’s a bit more secluded. Large murals are quite popular these days so it was fitting to see a large portrait of Kenny Wang himself on the neighbouring wall.

Today, I had the Red Korean Chicken Wings. The chicken wings were nice and crisp, and covered in a spicy red Korean chilli sauce. The dish came with a side of pickled carrots, radish and cucumbers which were sweet and tangy with a delightful crunchy texture. The heat from the wings was well balanced by the sweetness of the pickles, making this a perfect dish to go with an ice cold beer on a hot Summer day.

The staff were friendly and the service was very good. The atmosphere was relaxed, although there weren’t too many people about with today’s hot temperature. The chicken wings set me back $12, which wasn’t too bad considering the serving size and quality of the dish. The dishes start at $3 and go all the way to $15.

With a good selection of small plates and locally brewed beers, this place is set to be popular during the warm Summer months.
